New fuel conservation campaign includes reduced official vehicle use, metro commuting for staff, and a temporary halt on new government vehicle purchases
The Delhi government has announced a series of fuel conservation measures, including a two-day work-from-home policy for government employees and restrictions on official vehicle purchases, as part of a broader effort to reduce fuel consumption and promote public transport use.
The decisions were announced on Wednesday by Rekha Gupta after a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat. According to the Chief Minister, the measures are aimed at supporting national fuel conservation efforts following an appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Delhi Government to Introduce Work-From-Home Policy
Under the new plan, employees in Delhi government offices will be allowed to work from home two days a week. The government has also issued an advisory encouraging private companies in the national capital to consider adopting a similar arrangement.
The work-from-home initiative forms part of a 90-day public awareness campaign that the Delhi government plans to launch to encourage energy conservation and responsible fuel use.
Speaking at a press conference, the Chief Minister said that small lifestyle changes by citizens could contribute to strengthening the economy during periods of global uncertainty.
Fuel Consumption in Official Vehicles to Be Cut by 20%
The Delhi government has also directed departments to reduce fuel use in official vehicles by 20%.
As part of the initiative, ministers, senior officials, and government employees will use the Delhi Metro for commuting every Monday. The government is also urging residents to voluntarily avoid using private vehicles one day each week to help reduce fuel demand and traffic congestion.
No New Government Vehicle Purchases for Six Months
In another significant decision, the Delhi government said it will not purchase any new petrol, diesel, CNG, or hybrid vehicles for the next six months.
The move is intended to limit non-essential expenditure and encourage greater reliance on existing transport resources and public transit systems.
The government also announced changes to employee transport benefits. Staff members who spend at least 20% of their transport allowance on metro, DTC, or other public transport cards will receive an increase in transport allowance from 10% to 20%.
Rail Freight and ‘Made-in-India’ Procurement Prioritized
The administration said it would encourage the movement of freight through rail networks instead of trucks wherever possible. Officials stated that the shift could help reduce fuel consumption and road congestion in and around Delhi.
The government further announced that ministers and officials will not undertake official foreign visits for the next one year.
In addition, departments have been instructed to prioritize the procurement and use of domestically manufactured products under a “Made in India” approach.
Why the Measures Matter
Delhi has been dealing with rising traffic congestion, high fuel consumption, and persistent air pollution challenges for several years. Policies encouraging remote work and public transport use have previously been discussed during periods of severe pollution and peak congestion.
The latest measures combine administrative cost-cutting with environmental and fuel-saving objectives. Increased metro usage by government staff and reduced dependence on private vehicles could also help lower emissions in the capital.
The announcement comes at a time when governments across India are exploring ways to reduce fuel imports, improve urban mobility, and encourage sustainable transport practices.
