The late-night raid in Basistha underscores intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking in Assam.
Guwahati, April 2: In a significant anti-narcotics operation, police in Guwahati arrested an alleged drug peddler and seized 36 containers of suspected narcotic substances during a late-night raid in the Basistha area, officials said on Thursday. The operation was conducted by a team from Basistha Police Station on Wednesday night in the New Market locality, following specific inputs about illegal drug activity in the area.
According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Paresh Deka. During the search operation, officers recovered the suspected narcotics along with a mobile phone and a sum of cash, which are believed to be linked to the alleged illegal trade. The seizure is part of a broader effort by law enforcement agencies to crack down on the distribution and sale of drugs in the city.
Officials indicated that the arrest forms part of an ongoing campaign by Assam Police to address the growing concerns around drug trafficking and substance abuse in the region. In recent months, authorities have intensified surveillance and enforcement actions aimed at dismantling local networks involved in the illegal drug trade.
An investigation has been initiated to trace the source of the seized substances and identify any wider network connected to the accused. Police said further leads are being pursued, and additional arrests may follow as the probe progresses. The substances recovered are expected to undergo forensic examination to confirm their nature.
The crackdown comes amid sustained efforts by authorities to curb the spread of narcotics and reduce their impact on communities, particularly among young people. Officials reiterated their commitment to continuing strict enforcement measures to tackle drug-related crimes and ensure public safety.
