IMD warns of lightning risks and above-normal temperatures across multiple districts

Thiruvananthapuram, April 2: The India Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of unstable weather across Kerala, warning of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and rising temperatures that are expected to persist until Sunday. The advisory highlights the likelihood of sudden weather changes across the state, urging residents to remain cautious over the coming days.

According to the latest update, several regions may experience thunderstorms with lightning activity, particularly from Friday onwards when wind speeds are expected to pick up, ranging between 40 and 50 kmph. Officials have stressed that lightning poses a serious hazard during this period, with the potential to cause injuries, fatalities, and damage to infrastructure such as power lines, communication networks, and household electrical appliances. People have been advised to avoid open spaces and limit interaction with electrical equipment during such events.

Alongside the storm warning, the state is also likely to witness a steady rise in daytime temperatures, with several districts recording levels above the seasonal average. Palakkad is expected to be among the hottest areas, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius. Districts including Kollam, Kottayam, and Thrissur may see temperatures touch around 38 degrees, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Kannur could experience highs of approximately 37 degrees. In Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod, temperatures are likely to hover close to 36 degrees, with overall readings across Kerala remaining 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.

Meteorologists note that the combination of elevated temperatures and high humidity levels is expected to create uncomfortable weather conditions, especially in low-lying and coastal regions. While hilly areas may experience relatively milder temperatures, the broader impact of heat and moisture could lead to increased discomfort and health concerns such as dehydration and heat stress.

The weather department has reiterated the need for public vigilance, advising people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and keep track of weather updates. Residents are also encouraged to take precautions during thunderstorms, including staying indoors, avoiding shelter under trees, and unplugging electronic devices to prevent damage from lightning-related power surges.

This weather pattern is typical of Kerala’s pre-monsoon transition phase, where rising summer heat coincides with intermittent thunderstorm activity. Such conditions often bring both relief in the form of short spells of rain and increased risks due to lightning and strong winds. The current spell is expected to continue until Sunday, with authorities closely monitoring developments and issuing further advisories if necessary.
