MEA dismisses reports of third-party participation, says discussion followed standard diplomatic protocol

New Delhi, March 28 — The Government of India has clarified that the recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on March 24 was conducted strictly as a bilateral exchange, rejecting media reports that suggested the involvement of a third party. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the clarification after some reports claimed that billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk had joined the call, raising questions about the nature of high-level diplomatic engagements.

In a brief statement, the MEA said the conversation took place solely between the two leaders and did not include any additional participants. Officials noted that the discussion was aimed at sharing perspectives on the evolving situation in West Asia and coordinating on developments related to the ongoing conflict in the region. The government emphasised that the exchange followed established diplomatic norms and frameworks, which typically limit such conversations to official representatives of the respective governments.

The clarification comes in response to reports citing unnamed US officials, which described Musk’s alleged participation as unusual given the sensitivity of wartime discussions between heads of state. These reports had suggested that his involvement could reflect his growing influence in policy circles in Washington, particularly in areas linked to defence, satellite communications and artificial intelligence with relevance to West Asia. Some analysts also speculated that such a development might indicate a broader shift towards greater interaction between governments and private sector leaders during geopolitical crises.

However, Indian authorities firmly denied these claims and reiterated that no private individual, including business leaders, was part of the call on the Indian side. Officials maintained that high-level diplomatic engagements are conducted directly between governments and that any interactions involving private entities, if they occur, are kept separate from formal leader-level communications. The government did not provide technical or logistical details about the call but stressed that it adhered to established protocols.

The statement is seen as an effort to reinforce the credibility and integrity of official diplomatic channels while addressing speculation in both domestic and international media. By clearly stating that the Modi–Trump conversation was entirely bilateral, India has underscored its position that sensitive discussions between national leaders remain confined to formal government-to-government communication, particularly during periods of regional conflict and strategic importance.
