Prime Minister recalls socialist leader’s contributions to freedom struggle and social justice
New Delhi, March 23, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to noted socialist leader and freedom fighter Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia on his birth anniversary, highlighting his role in India’s independence movement and his enduring influence on social and political thought.
In his message, the Prime Minister described Dr. Lohia as a multifaceted personality who played a key role in mobilising people against British colonial rule. He also acknowledged Lohia’s contributions in shaping India’s development after independence, particularly through his advocacy for equality and social reform.
Sharing his tribute on social media platform X, Modi said that Dr. Lohia was an outstanding thinker and one of the foremost voices of social justice in India. He noted that Lohia remained committed throughout his life to empowering the poor and marginalised sections of society, and that his ideas continue to inspire generations.
The Prime Minister further underlined the continued relevance of Lohia’s views on gender equality and participatory governance, particularly at a time when discussions around inclusive growth and democratic participation remain central to public policy.
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, a prominent figure in India’s freedom struggle and a leading socialist thinker, was known for his strong critique of social and economic inequality. His ideas on decentralised governance and equitable development influenced several political movements in post-independence India and continue to be referenced in contemporary debates.
The tribute by the Prime Minister reflects the lasting significance of Lohia’s contributions, especially in the context of ongoing efforts to address inequality and strengthen democratic institutions.
