The rise of Kiran Pisda in Indian women’s football is a story shaped by persistence, adaptability and an unyielding mindset. Coming from Chhattisgarh, the 24-year-old has steadily worked her way up to the national stage, overcoming structural and personal challenges to build a career that continues to inspire young athletes, particularly from underrepresented regions.
Pisda recently drew attention for her composed performance during the semifinal of the Khelo India Tribal Games against Arunachal Pradesh, where her calm presence in a penalty shootout situation highlighted her experience and mental strength. Her ability to remain focused under pressure has become one of the defining features of her game as she matures into a dependable player.
At this stage of her career, Pisda is widely regarded as being at her peak. She has already represented India at the senior level and gained valuable exposure in European football with Dinamo Zagreb Women. Her journey abroad contributed significantly to her understanding of the game and helped sharpen her tactical awareness.
A key aspect of Pisda’s evolution as a footballer is her versatility. Over the years, she has transitioned across multiple roles on the field, starting out as a striker before moving into midfield and eventually settling as a full-back for the national team. This adaptability has not only strengthened her individual profile but also made her an asset for coaches looking for flexible options within the squad.
Her journey, however, has not been without obstacles. Early in her career, she benefited from strong support from her school, which provided her first opportunities to compete at the state and national levels. These initial exposures helped build her confidence, while her brother Girish, a national-level footballer, served as a constant source of inspiration.
Pisda later moved to Raipur to pursue a degree in physical education, a decision that proved crucial in shaping her career. Her performances in domestic competitions, including the Chhattisgarh Women’s League, brought her into the spotlight and earned her a call-up to the national camp. Yet, her first experience at that level revealed gaps in her preparation.
She has acknowledged that at the time, her fitness and mental readiness were not on par with senior players, resulting in her missing out on selection. Instead of discouraging her, the experience became a turning point. She began focusing intensively on improving her physical conditioning, analysing her performances, and developing a deeper understanding of the game.
A significant transformation came in her mental approach. Pisda consciously worked on eliminating negative thoughts, recognising their impact on performance. This shift in mindset, combined with disciplined training, allowed her to return stronger and better prepared for top-level competition.
Her development has also been guided by coach Yogesh Kumar Jangra, whose consistent support and encouragement have helped her navigate challenging phases. Pisda has often credited him for motivating her to stay focused and maintain a positive outlook during difficult periods.
At the domestic level, she has represented teams such as Kerala Blasters Women, where she continued to refine her skills and reinforce her adaptability. Her performances have earned her a place in the national setup, including involvement in the SAFF Women’s Championship 2022.
Despite her progress, setbacks have remained part of her journey. Missing out on selection for major tournaments, including the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, has been a source of disappointment. However, Pisda has chosen to treat such moments as motivation, using them to push herself further rather than lose confidence.
She has also developed a strong perspective on handling pressure, emphasising that mental resilience is crucial at the highest level. According to her, learning to manage expectations and remain composed during critical moments is as important as technical skill.
Coming from a tribal background, Pisda has consistently highlighted the lack of opportunities available to talented athletes in remote regions. She believes that initiatives like the Khelo India Tribal Games are playing an important role in bridging this gap by providing a platform for emerging players to showcase their abilities.
As she looks ahead, Pisda remains focused on maintaining consistency in domestic competitions and securing a regular place in the Indian national team. Her journey underscores a simple yet powerful message: setbacks are not a reflection of a player’s ability, but an opportunity to improve and come back stronger.
Kiran Pisda’s story is a testament to the power of determination and resilience. From humble beginnings to representing the country on significant stages, her journey reflects the growing depth of talent in Indian football and the importance of creating pathways for players from all backgrounds to succeed.
