Security heightened in Golaghat district after unidentified attackers target political figure’s home
Golaghat, April 6: Tension gripped parts of Assam’s Golaghat district on Monday after unidentified assailants hurled a grenade at the residence of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Biswajit Phukan in Sarupathar. The incident took place in Bilgaon Changpul, prompting an immediate security response and raising concerns amid ongoing political activity in the region.
According to preliminary information, the grenade was thrown at Phukan’s residence at a time when no family members were present inside the house. A caretaker, who was reportedly on the premises, escaped unharmed. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported in the attack, though the incident caused panic among residents in the area.
Police teams reached the spot soon after being alerted and secured the area. An investigation has been launched to identify those responsible and determine the motive behind the attack. Officials indicated that all possible angles are being examined, including whether the incident is linked to the prevailing political climate.
Following the attack, security has been tightened across Sarupathar and nearby localities. Additional personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation and to reassure residents.
Biswajit Phukan has lodged a formal complaint at the Barpathar Police Station, urging swift action against those involved. Police officials have stated that efforts are underway to gather evidence and track down the suspects.
The incident has added to concerns over safety during a politically sensitive period in Assam, where election-related activities often lead to heightened tensions. While no injuries were reported, the attack has unsettled the local community and drawn attention to the need for robust security arrangements.
Authorities are expected to maintain increased vigilance in the coming days as the investigation progresses, with further updates likely as more details emerge.
