Police recover cash in Jalukbari and Basistha; authorities yet to verify source and purpose
Guwahati, March 31: More than ₹29 lakh in cash was seized by police during routine checking operations in different parts of Guwahati on Tuesday, with officials stating that investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended use of the money.
In one instance, a joint team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), West Guwahati, along with Jalukbari Police, recovered ₹25 lakh during a naka checking drive in the Jalukbari area. The cash was being transported by a man identified as Sagar Mall Buzarbaruah, a resident of Nalbari district. During initial questioning, he reportedly told the police that the money was meant for his personal pharmacy business. However, authorities said the claim is yet to be verified and supporting documents are being examined.
In a separate operation conducted in the Basistha area, police seized ₹4,66,800 in cash during a checking drive at Maikhuli. The amount was reportedly being carried by a woman belonging to the Manipuri community. Following the seizure, Basistha Police handed over the cash to a flying squad for further scrutiny, in line with standard procedures followed during surveillance operations.
Officials indicated that the origin and intended use of the seized funds in both cases have not yet been established. Such checking drives are part of regular law enforcement efforts to monitor the movement of large sums of money and ensure compliance with legal and financial regulations. Authorities noted that individuals carrying significant amounts of cash are required to provide valid documentation to avoid suspicion.
The investigation is ongoing, and further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry, including whether any violations of law are identified.
