A fresh western disturbance is set to alter weather conditions across large parts of North India, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and a noticeable dip in temperatures over the coming days. Several states across the northern plains and hill regions are expected to witness changing weather patterns, marking a shift from the recent spell of relatively warmer winter conditions.

Rainfall Likely Over Delhi and Adjoining States

According to the latest IMD bulletin, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over the national capital Delhi and adjoining regions of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are also expected in certain pockets, particularly across northwest India.

Meteorologists attribute the change to an active western disturbance moving eastwards across the western Himalayan region. Such systems are common during the winter months and typically bring rain to the plains and snowfall to higher altitudes. The interaction between the western disturbance and local weather systems is expected to trigger brief but significant precipitation episodes.

In Delhi, maximum temperatures, which had been hovering above seasonal averages in recent days, are likely to fall by two to four degrees Celsius. Night temperatures may initially remain stable before dipping gradually as the system moves eastward.

Snowfall Expected in Hill States

In the hill states, the IMD has forecast light to moderate snowfall in higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, along with rain or snow in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities in these regions are closely monitoring the situation, as snowfall can temporarily affect road connectivity, especially in elevated terrain.

While no widespread heavy precipitation warning has been issued for most plains, isolated hailstorms cannot be ruled out in select districts. Farmers and horticulturists in affected states have been advised to follow local agricultural advisories and take necessary precautions.

Temperature Trends and Seasonal Transition

The IMD has indicated that the current weather system will bring a noticeable dip in daytime temperatures across northwest India. The drop is expected to be temporary, with conditions likely to stabilise once the disturbance weakens.

Weather experts note that such fluctuations are typical during late winter and early pre-spring transitions in North India. Western disturbances often interrupt dry spells, providing intermittent rainfall that can benefit winter crops such as wheat and mustard, though unseasonal intensity may cause localized damage.

In urban centres, light rainfall may also help settle dust and marginally improve air quality, though sustained improvement generally requires broader atmospheric changes.

Public Advisory and Preparedness

The IMD has urged residents to stay updated with official bulletins, especially those travelling or planning outdoor activities. Thunderstorms and gusty winds can temporarily disrupt traffic and reduce visibility. In hill areas, travellers are advised to check local advisories before undertaking journeys through high-altitude routes.

With the western disturbance expected to influence weather over the next couple of days, North India is set for a brief but notable shift in atmospheric conditions. As temperatures dip and rainfall spreads across several states, the episode serves as a reminder of the dynamic and often rapidly changing nature of winter weather in the region.

The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and will issue further updates as conditions evolve.
