Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert for several parts of Kerala, forecasting spells of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days. The advisory comes amid unstable atmospheric conditions influencing the southern peninsula, with intermittent showers already reported in parts of the state.
According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rain is expected across multiple districts, with isolated heavy spells in some regions. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely during afternoon and evening hours, particularly in interior and hilly districts. Temperatures are expected to remain on the higher side between rain spells, contributing to humid conditions across coastal belts and central Kerala.

Lightning poses a significant risk during thunderstorm activity. The IMD recommends avoiding open fields, hilltops and water bodies during lightning strikes. People are advised to remain indoors during intense thunderstorm episodes, unplug electrical appliances if necessary and avoid sheltering under isolated trees.
Kerala’s geography, with its Western Ghats terrain and extensive coastline, often results in highly localized rainfall patterns. Sudden heavy showers in upstream areas can lead to a rapid rise in water levels in streams and low-lying regions. Although current forecasts do not indicate a large-scale flood situation, authorities emphasize the importance of precaution and preparedness.
State disaster management teams remain on standby to respond to any emergency situations. Schools and institutions are expected to follow district-level advisories if conditions intensify. Residents are encouraged to rely only on official weather bulletins and verified government communication channels for updates.
