Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, one of India’s most celebrated scientists, continues to inspire generations with his groundbreaking work in physics. Born on November 7, 1888, in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Raman became the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for his discovery of the phenomenon now known as the Raman Effect.

The discovery, made in 1928, explained how light changes its wavelength when it passes through a transparent material. This finding not only opened new pathways in the study of molecular and atomic structures but also placed Indian science on the global stage. The United Nations later designated February 28 as National Science Day in India to commemorate this discovery.

Raman’s career spanned academic and institutional leadership. He served as the first Indian director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and later founded the Raman Research Institute in 1948, which remains a centre for advanced studies in physics. His contributions extended to acoustics, optics, and crystallography, reflecting a wide range of scientific curiosity.

Beyond his Nobel Prize, Raman received several recognitions, including a knighthood in 1929, the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and membership in prominent scientific academies worldwide. His approach to research emphasized indigenous talent and self-reliance in scientific infrastructure at a time when colonial India had limited resources.

Raman passed away on November 21, 1970, but his influence endures. His work continues to be applied in diverse fields, from medical diagnostics and material science to quantum technology.

In today’s context, as India increases investment in research and innovation, Raman’s life serves as a reminder of how determined pursuit of science can transform a nation’s global standing. Educational institutions across the country mark his contributions annually, ensuring that new generations recognize his role not only as a Nobel laureate but as a pioneer of modern Indian science.
