Both countries plan deeper collaboration in emerging technologies, human spaceflight, and scientific research as they prepare for the 2026 India-France Year of Innovation

India and France have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in space research, artificial intelligence, and advanced scientific technologies following a high-level virtual meeting between senior ministers from both countries on Thursday.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh held talks with France’s Minister for Higher Education, Research and Space, Prof. Philippe Baptiste, to review ongoing joint projects and discuss future areas of collaboration.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in space missions, AI research, applied mathematics, digital science, and ocean-related data sharing. Both sides described the India-France partnership in science and technology as an important pillar of their broader strategic relationship.

Focus on Space and Emerging Technologies

During the meeting, the two countries reviewed progress on several joint space missions, including Megha-Tropiques, SARAL, and TRISHNA, which have been developed through cooperation between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French space agency CNES.

These missions are aimed at climate monitoring, oceanography, and Earth observation, areas that have become increasingly important as countries strengthen efforts to tackle climate change and environmental challenges.

Officials noted that the long-standing partnership between ISRO and CNES has helped both nations expand scientific research capabilities and improve technological exchange.

2026 to be Celebrated as India-France Year of Innovation

Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that 2026 will be observed as the “India-France Year of Innovation,” an initiative intended to encourage joint research and technological development between institutions from both countries.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the initiative will focus on collaborative work in artificial intelligence, digital sciences, applied mathematics, and other emerging technology sectors.

The proposed innovation year is expected to strengthen academic exchanges, industrial partnerships, and research collaborations between Indian and French institutions.

France Offers Support for Gaganyaan Mission

France also reaffirmed its support for India’s Gaganyaan programme, the country’s first planned human spaceflight mission.

French officials described the mission as an important opportunity for cooperation in human space exploration. France proposed expanding collaboration in astronaut training, microgravity experiments, and scientific research related to long-duration space missions.

India welcomed the proposal and expressed interest in exploring broader cooperation in future human spaceflight programmes.

The Gaganyaan mission is one of India’s most ambitious space projects and is aimed at sending Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit aboard an indigenous spacecraft.

Cooperation in Ocean Research and Data Sharing

Another key area discussed during the meeting was collaboration under the “Space for Ocean Alliance,” which focuses on sharing satellite data and scientific information related to oceans and maritime ecosystems.

India highlighted the potential of its Deep Ocean Mission and its extensive maritime geography as strong foundations for deeper cooperation in marine research and monitoring.

Experts believe that improved satellite-based ocean observation can help countries better manage climate risks, marine resources, disaster response, and coastal ecosystems.

Growing Importance of India-France Scientific Partnership

India and France have steadily expanded cooperation in defence, climate action, clean energy, and technology over the past decade. Scientific collaboration has emerged as a major component of the relationship, particularly in space technology and advanced research.

The latest discussions reflect increasing global interest in partnerships focused on AI, space exploration, and critical technologies, sectors expected to shape economic and strategic priorities in the coming years.

With plans for joint innovation initiatives and expanded research cooperation, both countries are expected to deepen institutional and scientific engagement ahead of the 2026 innovation partnership year.
