Senior officers assess ground situation, strengthen surveillance and coordination along sensitive border belt
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police for the Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, Shiv Kumar Sharma, on Tuesday conducted a detailed review of the security situation and operational preparedness in the border areas of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The visit covered several sensitive locations near the international border, where he was accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua Mohita Sharma and other senior officers responsible for operations in border and Kandi regions.
During the inspection, Sharma interacted with police personnel and members of Village Defence Guards (VDGs) deployed in vulnerable areas, assessing their readiness and understanding of ground challenges. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of alertness and professionalism, particularly at naka points, which are critical checkpoints used to monitor movement and prevent illegal activities or infiltration. Officers were directed to strengthen checking procedures and intensify surveillance, especially during night hours when risks are typically higher.
Officials said the DIG also briefed the deployed personnel on the sensitive nature of their duties and instructed them to remain vigilant against anti-social and anti-national elements operating in the border belt. He underscored the need for proactive policing and continuous monitoring to prevent any security lapses in the region.
As part of broader border management efforts, Sharma held discussions with senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF) to improve coordination between agencies. The interaction focused on enhancing joint operations and information sharing, with specific directions issued for setting up joint naka points to improve operational efficiency and response capabilities.
Kathua district, located along the India-Pakistan international border, remains a strategically sensitive region where security agencies maintain constant vigilance to prevent infiltration and ensure public safety. Regular reviews by senior officials are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen preparedness and coordination in the area, particularly during periods of increased movement such as festivals.
The visit concluded with the DIG distributing sweets among security personnel as a gesture to boost morale ahead of upcoming festivities, while reiterating the need for continued vigilance and coordination to maintain security in the border areas.
