Washington, April 3: In a major development within the United States military establishment, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to step down and proceed with immediate retirement, a decision that comes amid an intensifying conflict involving Iran. The Pentagon confirmed the move through its chief spokesperson Sean Parnell, who said General George would retire with immediate effect and acknowledged his long service to the nation, noting that the department remains grateful for his decades of contribution.

General George, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, took over as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army in 2023 after being nominated by Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate. His tenure was originally expected to continue until 2027, in line with the standard four-year term associated with the role. Over the course of his career, he held several key positions, including serving as senior military assistant to former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and participated in major military operations such as the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, underscoring his extensive operational experience.
The timing of these changes has drawn attention given the ongoing tensions involving Iran, although the Pentagon has not publicly elaborated on the specific reasons behind the decisions.
