New digital initiative aims to strengthen frontline staff training, operational awareness, and real-time safety monitoring across divisions

In an effort to improve railway safety and operational efficiency, Northern Railway has launched a new YouTube-based awareness platform called “RailSafe.” The initiative was unveiled during a train operations conference held at Baroda House in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The channel was launched by Northern Railway General Manager Rajesh Kumar Pandey as part of the zone’s broader push to use technology-driven tools for safer and more efficient train operations.

Focus on Frontline Safety Training

According to railway officials, the “RailSafe” YouTube channel is designed to provide practical guidance and operational safety information to frontline railway employees. The platform will host instructional and awareness content related to train handling, field operations, safety procedures, and best practices.

Speaking at the conference, Pandey said passenger and operational safety remain Northern Railway’s highest priority. He noted that digital platforms such as RailSafe can help improve communication and training for staff working directly in train operations.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Principal Chief Operations Manager Monika Agnihotri and divisional operations managers from Delhi, Ambala, Firozpur, Lucknow, Moradabad, and Jammu divisions.

Technology-Based Safety Measures Highlighted

During the conference, different railway divisions presented several technology-focused initiatives aimed at improving operational management and reducing safety risks.

Jammu Division Introduces ‘AARAV’ Monitoring Tool

The Jammu Division showcased a mobile-based system named AARAV — short for Automated Assessment, Reporting, Alert, and Real-Time Analysis Verification System.

The tool allows railway officers to report field-level deficiencies instantly through mobile devices. Officials said the system helps departments receive alerts in real time, enabling faster corrective action and monitoring.

Such digital reporting systems are increasingly being adopted across railway networks to reduce delays in maintenance responses and improve accountability.

Delhi Division Expands Safety Campaigns

The Delhi Division presented a six-part safety initiative focused on inspections, staff engagement, and performance tracking.

The campaign includes:

  • Daily safety inspections under the “Nav Suraksha” programme
  • Weekly consultation sessions called “Suraksha Chaupal”
  • A live KPI monitoring application
  • Mentor-mentee guidance systems
  • Digital safety messaging in operational control rooms
  • “Shunting Melas” for direct interaction with frontline staff

Officials said 61 such shunting-related outreach programmes have already been conducted to improve communication between management and operational employees.

Freight Operations and Export Logistics Discussed

Apart from passenger safety, the conference also reviewed freight movement and logistics management.

The Firozpur Division highlighted progress under its “Hub and Spoke Model” aimed at supporting Basmati rice exports from Punjab. Under the system, freight movement has been streamlined to destinations including Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad through competitive transport rates.

Railway officials said the latest shipment under the initiative moved 1,350 metric tonnes of Basmati rice from Phillaur to southern markets on May 4.

Why the Initiative Matters

Indian Railways has increasingly focused on digitisation, operational monitoring, and staff training as part of its long-term safety strategy. With one of the world’s largest rail networks, improving coordination between divisions and ensuring consistent safety practices remain major operational priorities.

The launch of RailSafe reflects a broader shift toward using accessible digital platforms for workforce training and awareness, particularly for employees involved in daily train operations and field management.

Next Steps

Northern Railway officials said the organisation will continue expanding the use of technology-based monitoring tools and operational training systems across divisions. The conference concluded with discussions on improving punctuality, strengthening safety mechanisms, and enhancing coordination between departments.

The RailSafe initiative is expected to become part of Northern Railway’s ongoing efforts to modernise operations while maintaining passenger safety and service reliability across its network.
