Government seeks political consensus as India assesses economic and strategic impact of Iran-Israel-US tensions

The Union government has convened an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss the escalating conflict in West Asia, amid growing concerns over its potential impact on India’s energy security and geopolitical interests. The meeting, scheduled to be held at the Parliament complex at 5 pm, comes at a time when opposition parties have been pressing the government to clarify its position on the ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

The move is seen as an effort by the Centre to engage political stakeholders across party lines and build a broader consensus on India’s response to the crisis. The discussions are expected to cover diplomatic positioning, economic risks and preparedness measures in case the situation in the region deteriorates further.

A day ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump to review the evolving situation in West Asia. According to official statements, both leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in critical global trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital passage for global oil shipments. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s stance in favour of de-escalation and an early restoration of peace, underlining that uninterrupted navigation through the Strait is essential for global economic stability.

Earlier, addressing the Rajya Sabha, Modi said India has adequate crude oil reserves and systems in place to ensure uninterrupted supply despite potential disruptions in the region. He noted that the government has strengthened strategic petroleum reserves and expanded refining capacity to cushion against global supply shocks. He also informed Parliament that seven empowered groups have been formed to monitor fuel availability, manage supply chains and ensure fertiliser supplies, aimed at minimising the impact of the conflict on domestic markets.

In parallel, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level meeting with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, the service chiefs and senior officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation to review India’s preparedness in light of the changing global security environment. The meeting focused on assessing defence readiness and ensuring that India remains prepared for any potential fallout from the ongoing tensions.

The developments in West Asia hold significant importance for India, which depends heavily on the region for its energy imports. Any disruption in supply routes or escalation in conflict could affect fuel prices, inflation and overall economic stability. The region is also home to a large Indian diaspora, adding to the urgency of closely monitoring the situation. The all-party meeting is expected to provide greater clarity on India’s unified political approach and preparedness strategy as the government continues to navigate the evolving geopolitical landscape.
