Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker hold high-level talks in New Delhi, reaffirming commitment to stronger bilateral ties

New Delhi, April 16:
India and Austria on Thursday signed multiple agreements, including a pact on food security, following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in the national capital.

The discussions took place at Hyderabad House, where both sides focused on expanding cooperation across trade, investment, technology and global challenges. The meeting marked a significant step in efforts to strengthen engagement between India and Austria amid evolving geopolitical and economic conditions.

A key outcome of the talks was an agreement on food security, an area that has gained increasing importance due to global supply disruptions and climate-related risks. The pact is expected to promote collaboration in agricultural practices, resilience-building and knowledge sharing, although detailed provisions have not yet been made public.

Senior members of the Indian government, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, were present during the discussions, reflecting the emphasis on economic and strategic cooperation in the bilateral relationship.

Earlier in the day, Chancellor Stocker paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. The visit underscored India’s continued projection of its legacy of peace and non-violence in diplomatic engagements. According to official sources, the Austrian leader reflected on the relevance of Gandhi’s ideals in addressing contemporary global challenges.

India and Austria share longstanding diplomatic ties, with cooperation spanning trade, science and culture. In recent years, both countries have sought to strengthen collaboration in areas such as innovation, sustainability and advanced technology, aligning with broader global priorities. Austria’s position within the European Union also makes it a key partner for India’s outreach to Europe.

The agreements signed during the visit are expected to enhance bilateral engagement and open up new opportunities for collaboration between industries, institutions and policymakers. The focus on food security, in particular, highlights a shared interest in addressing global concerns related to agriculture and sustainable development.

While specific timelines for implementation have not been announced, both sides indicated a commitment to advancing the outcomes of the talks through continued dialogue and coordinated efforts in the months ahead.
