A severe heatwave has gripped Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, prompting district administrations to shut down educational institutions as temperatures continue to soar beyond 42°C. Authorities in Nagpur and Wardha have announced temporary closures of schools, colleges, and tuition classes to protect students from extreme heat conditions.
In Nagpur, the district collector declared a holiday for Saturday, while Wardha administration ordered closures a day earlier in response to rising temperatures. The decision comes as multiple districts in the region recorded dangerously high temperatures, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
On Friday, Nagpur, Gadchiroli, and Washim each reported temperatures touching 44°C. Wardha emerged as the hottest location in the region with 44.4°C, followed by Akola at 44.1°C. Other districts also witnessed intense heat, with Chandrapur recording 43.6°C, Brahmapuri 43°C, Yavatmal 42.8°C, Gondia 42.9°C, and Bhandara 42°C. Buldana registered 41.2°C, slightly lower but still significantly above normal levels for this time of year.
The Regional Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Vidarbha for the next two days, warning of continued high temperatures and advising caution. A yellow alert indicates potentially hazardous weather conditions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health issues.
Officials say the decision to suspend classes is a precautionary measure aimed at minimizing exposure to extreme heat during peak daytime hours. Health experts have also urged residents to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon, and wearing light clothing.
Vidarbha is known for its harsh summers, but the intensity of the current heatwave in mid-April has raised concerns. The early onset of such extreme temperatures highlights growing challenges linked to heat stress, water availability, and public health preparedness.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may extend preventive measures if conditions persist. Further decisions regarding school operations and public advisories are expected based on weather developments in the coming days.
