Trump Declares BRICS "Broke Up" After 150% Tariff Threat, Calls Bloc "Dead"
Summary: US President Donald Trump claims BRICS has collapsed after he threatened 150% tariffs on member nations considering alternatives to the US dollar. Here’s what he said
In a bold statement on Thursday, US President Donald Trump claimed that the BRICS alliance has “broken up”, just days after he threatened 100% tariffs on its member nations for attempting to seek an alternative to the US dollar.
Speaking at a public event, Trump accused the BRICS nations of trying to undermine the US dollar’s dominance by creating a new currency, prompting his administration to take decisive action.
“BRICS states were trying to destroy our dollar. They wanted to create a new currency. So, the first thing I did was tell them—any BRICS nation even mentioning the destruction of the dollar will be hit with a 150% tariff, and we won’t take their goods. The BRICS states just broke up,” Trump declared.
He further stated, “I don’t know what the hell happened to them. We haven’t heard from BRICS lately.”
What Is BRICS?
Formed in 2009, BRICS is an intergovernmental alliance comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE. It is one of the only major international coalitions excluding the US and has long sought to reduce dependence on the US dollar.
In recent years, the bloc has explored alternatives such as a common BRICS currency to facilitate trade within member states, reducing their reliance on the Western-dominated financial system.
Trump’s Long-Standing Opposition to BRICS
Even before assuming office, Trump warned BRICS nations against attempting to introduce an alternative to the US dollar. Last week, he issued a fresh threat of 100% tariffs on all BRICS member states and claimed that the bloc was created for “a bad purpose.”
“BRICS was put there for a bad purpose. Most of these countries don’t even want it. They are afraid to talk about it now because I told them if they play games with the dollar, they’ll be hit with a 100% tariff,” he said.
Trump went on to declare that BRICS is “dead,” asserting that his administration’s strong stance had effectively dismantled the alliance.
Is BRICS Really Falling Apart?
While Trump’s comments suggest a major setback for BRICS, no official statement has been made by the bloc’s leadership regarding its disbandment. The group recently expanded its membership in 2023, adding five new nations, signaling continued efforts to strengthen its global influence.
With geopolitical tensions escalating and economic alliances shifting, it remains to be seen whether Trump’s aggressive tariff threats will deter BRICS from pursuing its de-dollarization agenda—or push it further toward creating an independent financial system.
