Curbs on mobile data services to remain in force for two more days as authorities cite risks of misinformation and unrest

The government of Manipur has extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services in five districts for an additional two days, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.

According to an order issued by the state’s Home Department, the restrictions will continue in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts from 2:00 PM on April 10, 2026. The extension follows a fresh assessment of the ground situation by authorities.

Officials said the decision was taken as a preventive measure, citing concerns that the spread of misinformation and rumours on social media could trigger unrest. Authorities warned that unverified content circulating on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and X could potentially lead to mob mobilisation, violence, or damage to property.

The order has been issued under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, after obtaining approval from the Governor. The government noted that monitoring mobile data traffic in real time remains a technical challenge, making temporary suspension a necessary step in sensitive situations.

The latest extension comes after mobile internet services were initially suspended for three days starting April 7. While some fixed-line internet services, including Internet Leased Line (ILL) and Fiber to the Home (FTTH), were partially restored on April 8 under specific conditions, mobile data services have continued to remain restricted.

The restrictions are expected to affect daily life, particularly for those dependent on mobile connectivity for communication, business, and access to essential services. However, authorities have maintained that the measure is aimed at preventing escalation and ensuring public safety.

The order was issued on an urgent basis and will be communicated through various public channels. The government has also cautioned that any violation of the restrictions will invite legal action under applicable laws. Further decisions on restoring services are likely to depend on how the situation develops in the coming days.
