Actor-turned-politician meets Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar in Chennai as post-poll negotiations intensify over government formation
Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and formally staked claim to form the next government after his party emerged as the single largest formation in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The development marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK making a strong electoral debut in its first-ever Assembly contest.
Vijay arrived at Lok Bhavan in Chennai amid heightened political activity and security arrangements. He was accompanied by several senior party leaders, including ‘Bussy’ Anand, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Aadhav Arjuna, Arun Raj and other members of the party leadership.
TVK Seeks Opportunity to Form Government
According to sources familiar with the meeting, Vijay submitted a formal letter to the Governor seeking an invitation to form the government. He is also understood to have assured the Governor that TVK would prove its majority on the floor of the Assembly within the constitutionally mandated time frame.
The move came a day after newly elected TVK legislators unanimously chose Vijay as the leader of the party’s legislative wing, a key procedural step before staking claim to power.
In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a party or alliance requires at least 118 seats to secure a simple majority. TVK won 108 seats, placing it ahead of all other parties but short of the halfway mark.
Post-Poll Negotiations Gain Momentum
With no party securing an outright majority, political discussions and alliance negotiations have intensified in Chennai.
Sources indicate that the Congress has extended conditional support to TVK, while Left parties and several smaller regional outfits are expected to announce their positions after internal consultations. Independent legislators could also play an important role in determining the final balance of power.
The post-election arithmetic has made coalition-building central to the next phase of government formation in the state.

A Major Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
TVK’s performance is being viewed as one of the most significant political developments in recent Tamil Nadu electoral history. The party, founded by actor Vijay, entered the Assembly elections for the first time and managed to secure enough seats to emerge as the largest single party in the state.
The result has disrupted the traditional dominance of established Dravidian parties and introduced a new power centre in state politics.
Political analysts say the coming days will be crucial, as parties weigh strategic alliances and negotiate terms of support. The Governor is expected to assess claims and available support before taking a decision on inviting a party or alliance to form the government.
What Happens Next
Under constitutional procedure, the Governor may invite the leader who appears most likely to command majority support in the Assembly. If invited to form the government, Vijay would be required to prove his majority through a floor test in the Assembly within a stipulated period.
The evolving political situation has also prompted introspection within rival camps. The DMK, which has lost power after one term in office, is reportedly reviewing its political strategy in light of the election outcome.
As negotiations continue, Tamil Nadu now enters a critical phase that will determine the composition and stability of the next state government.
