Heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems, prompting school closures and widespread disruption
Guwahati, April 20: Large parts of Guwahati were inundated on Monday morning after intense overnight rainfall triggered widespread waterlogging, often described as artificial flooding, across the city. The sudden downpour submerged roads and internal lanes, severely affecting daily life and bringing traffic movement to a near standstill in several areas.
Commuters faced long delays as key stretches became impassable due to accumulated rainwater. Residents in low-lying neighbourhoods reported water entering residential premises, adding to the disruption and raising concerns about the city’s preparedness for heavy rainfall events. Several localities, including Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, Tarun Nagar, Nabinnagar and Jatia, were among the worst affected, with streets and by-lanes remaining submerged for hours.
In response to the situation, authorities in Kamrup Metropolitan district announced a temporary closure of schools to ensure student safety and reduce unnecessary movement in flood-affected zones. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure amid fluctuating water levels in different parts of the city.
According to the district administration, the flooding was primarily caused by the drainage system being overwhelmed by the intensity of the rainfall. Unlike riverine floods, this episode was the result of urban infrastructure struggling to cope with the sudden volume of water, leading to flood-like conditions across multiple areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have kept emergency teams on standby to respond to any escalation.
Guwahati has witnessed similar instances of urban flooding in the past, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Experts have often pointed to rapid urban expansion, encroachment on natural drainage channels, and limitations in stormwater management systems as key factors behind recurring waterlogging in the city.
The impact of the flooding has been felt across daily life, with office-goers, students and small businesses facing significant inconvenience. Traffic congestion, delayed services and restricted access to essential facilities added to the challenges for residents.
With weather conditions remaining uncertain, officials are expected to continue monitoring vulnerable areas and may issue further advisories if rainfall persists. The latest incident has once again underscored the urgent need for improved urban planning and stronger drainage infrastructure to prevent recurring disruptions in Assam’s largest city.
